The magi, as Gentile foreigners, would be able to get through the checkpoint into Bethlehem in the same way that I did when I visited. It would now be illegal under Israeli law for Herod and his court to enter, though. Jewish Israelis are forbidden from visiting and seeing Palestinians as ordinary people, living in their own homes, which makes it easier to convince them that all Palestinians are terrorists who want to kill them. Herod’s soldiers would still be able to raid Bethlehem, as the IDF did this Christmas. Mary and Joseph would need to go through multiple checkpoints on their flight to Egypt, and arguing that they needed to do so to save the life of their baby might not work. Continue reading →

Bishara Awad was just a child when his father was killed during the Israeli-Arab war of 1948. After the family fled their Jerusalem home, Bishara and his siblings grew up as refugees. Andrew Bush, the director of the Bethlehem Institute of Peace and Justice (BIPJ), with the Network of Evangelicals for the Middle East (NEME) recently conducted a webinar to celebrate the launching of  Bishara Awad’s new autobiography, Yet in the Dark Streets Shining.  In this webinar, Andrew interviews Bishara about his life story.  Co-written with Mercy Aiken, this is a moving account of a Palestinian family trying to survive the war in 1948 in Jerusalem. It is a testimony of faith in Christ Jesus that sustains a family in the face of grievous loss.  It is a witness of the miraculous founding and growth of Bethlehem Bible College.  You will be encouraged by viewing this interview and by reading Yet in the Dark Streets Shining!
