MANILA, Philippines – Former Ilocos Norte representative Roquito “Roque” Ablan Jr died on Monday, March 26. He was 85.

His son, Communications Assistant Secretary Kris Ablan, confirmed the news on Facebook.

“My dad passed away peacefully this morning,” he said. “Lucky to be at his bedside when he died.”

The former politician’s remains will lie in state starting on Tuesday, March 27, at St Alphonsus Mary de Liguori Parish in Makati City.

According to his son, instead of flowers and mass cards, his father would have appreciated donations to the Governor Roque and Manuela Ablan Foundation, Incorporated.

Born in Laoag City on April 22, 1932, Ablan is the son of former governor Roque Ablan Sr.

Ablan’s political career started when he became an Ilocos Norte provincial board member in 1963.

In 1968, he was elected to represent the First District of Ilocs Norte in Congress, serving two terms until 1972.

The 12th Congress of the Philippines (Filipino: Ikalabindalawang Kongreso ng Pilipinas), composed of the Philippine Senate and House of Representatives, met from July 23, 2001, until June 4, 2004, during the first three years of Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's presidency. The convening of the 12th Congress followed the 2001 general elections, which replaced half of the Senate membership, and the entire membership of the House of Representatives.

    On August 9, 1906, Governor Roque Ablan, Sr. was born in Ilocos Norte. After graduating from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Philosophy by 1929, Ablan took up law and passed the bar exam the following year, 1930. When he was elected as governor of Ilocos Norte in 1937, he became his home province's youngest governor yet at the time. The advent of the Second World War in the Philippines in 1941, however, tested Ablan's heart for public service. Coming off from a victorious reelection during the same year, the governor was confronted with the choice between cooperation with the invading Japanese forces or carrying on the struggle against them. Evidently, Ablan chose the latter, establishing the Ilocos Guerrillas with a USAFFE 11th Infantry Division intelligence officer, Lieutenant Feliciano Madamba, around 150 other soldiers, and 300 rifles on January 15, 1942.
