1“In life one must always be decent, courageous and kind-hearted”, writes Heinrich Himmler in a letter to his daughter Gudrun. However, the newest documentary of Vanessa Lapa, an Israel-based filmmaker, is absolutely not about decency. The title, Der Anständige or The decent one, is in fact an ironic reference to this word that is cited over a thousand times in Himmler’s writings.

2Lapa’s 90-minute film issued from over 700 documents, 300 numbered letters Himmler exchanged with his first wife and his daughter, diaries, various correspondence with his mistress, movies and pictures. It was chosen as the Best Documentary at the 2014 Jerusalem Film Festival and presented in the official selection of many other festivals, including the Berlinale. Lapa’s documentary was screened in New York, Los Angeles, Vienna, Paris, and at Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen.

Heinrich Himmler was known as Hitler's executioner, the Architect of Genocide, an evil genius, a murderous monster, and der treue Heinrich. But the Reichführer SS, once a sickly child bent on placating and pleasing all of those around him had a great deal of influence during his rise to become one of the most dangerous individuals of the twentieth century. Downfall (German: Der Untergang) is a 2004 historicalwardrama film written and produced by Bernd Eichinger and directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel. It is set during the Battle of Berlin in World War II, when Nazi Germany is on the verge of total defeat, and depicts the final days of Adolf Hitler (portrayed by Bruno Ganz). The cast includes Alexandra Maria Lara, Corinna Harfouch, Ulrich Matthes, Juliane Köhler, Heino Ferch, Christian Berkel, Alexander Held, Matthias Habich, and Thomas Kretschmann. The film is a German-Austrian-Italian co-production.

Principal photography took place from September to November 2003, on location in Berlin, Munich, and Saint Petersburg, Russia. As the film is set in and around the Führerbunker, Hirschbiegel used eyewitness accounts, survivors' memoirs, and other historical sources during production to reconstruct the look and atmosphere of 1940s Berlin.
