Pioneering food writer and restauranteur Jiggs Kalra dies at the age of 72
In a career spanning four decades, Kalra was credited with reviving and introducing lost cooking techniques and recipes from royal kitchens.
He also authored 11 books on Indian food, most notably Prashad: Cooking with Indian Masters.He was also the consulting Food Editor to Bennett Coleman & Co publications, The Times of India and Femina.
Kalra started out a food columnist with The Illustrated Weekly of India in the 1970s, working with its then editor Khushwant Singh, who gave them the titles the ‘czar of Indian cuisine’ and 'taste maker to the nation'.
He went to work as a food consultant with major hotel chains such as ITC Hotels, the Oberoi group and the Park group. He collaborated with chef Imtiaz Qureshi to set up the iconic Dum Pukht at ITC Maurya in Delhi, introducing Awadh

Jiggs Kalra was unwell for the past few weeks, and passed away at a hospital in Gurugram, said a source close to his family.
Celebrated chef Jiggs Kalra, who earned epithets like ‘Czar of Indian Cuisine’ and ‘Taste Maker to the Nation’, passed away on Tuesday in Gurugram. He was 72.

“Today is my father Jiggs Kalra’s 72nd birthday. This is the first time unfortunately it has been celebrated in hospital, as he isn’t well. Last year we celebrated it together as a family. Nothing matters more than time spent with your parents as each and every single birthday matters. He is a toughie. Jaspal Inder Singh Kalra, better known as Jiggs Kalra (21 May 1947 – 4 June 2019), was an Indian restaurateur, food columnist, television host, and author. He was popularly known as the "czar of Indian cuisine"[1] and "tastemaker to the Nation."[2][3][4]
Career
Jaspal Inder Singh Kalra attended Mayo College, a boarding school in Rajasthan, where he was captain of the basketball team where he may have acquired the nickname Jiggs.[3] Soon after graduating, he started working as a trainee journalist at The Times of India in Bombay.
