Li Keran (李可染, 1907-1989) was a painter and art educator, who was a prominent figure in 20th-century Chinese art.

Li Keran was a pronounced Chinese artist of the 20th century and influential educator at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts. Most of his works entailed landscape paintings that contained a mixed of ancient and contemporary styles. Li attended the Shanghai Art College where he was inspired greatly by a professor who’s ideals involved blending Eastern and Western art styles to create a new style of art in Chinese paintings. Li then was admitted to the Hangzhou National Art College where he studied drawing and oil painting. A few years later he then became a member of the Yiba Art Society, a leftist art organization. Li was present when Mao Zedong founded the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Li lived through the Sino-Japanese War, and during the period after began to create works by the use of an imaginative splashed ink technique. Li’s work became more recognized as he was proposed, and accepted, an invitation to join the faculty at the Beijing National Art College. Li Keran (Chinese: 李可染; Wade–Giles: Li K'o-jan; 26 March 1907 – 5 December 1989), art name Sanqi, was a contemporary Chinese guohua painter and art educator. Considered one of the most important Chinese artists in the latter half of the 20th century, he was also an influential professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts where he taught a generation of Chinese artists.^[1] Although trained in Western oil painting, he was known for his traditional literati paintings with influences from Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong, two renowned masters in Chinese painting.^[1]

Li's paintings are highly valued at auctions, with several fetching hundreds of millions of yuan. His personal auction record was set by Thousands of Hills in a Crimsoned View (also translated as Landscape in Red), one of his most celebrated works, which sold for CN¥293.25 million (US$46 million) in June 2012.

Contemporary Chinese artist Li Keran was among the most significant painters and professors of art of the twentieth century. His work synthesizes his training in Western oil painting and traditional Chinese ink wash painting in highly sophisticated and nuanced compositions. Li famously explained, “Delve into tradition with the utmost dedication and then break away from it with the utmost courage.”

Born in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province in 1907, Li pursued painting from a young age, training under local artist Qian Shizhi, and enrolling in the Shanghai Art Academy at the age of sixteen. He then studied Western art at the National Academy of Arts in Hangzhou under Lin Fengmian, the president of the academy, and French painter André Claudot. He was invited to teach at the National Peping Academy of Arts in 1946, where he was encouraged and supported by the highly renowned artists Qi Baishi and Huang Binhong.
