I was born into abject poverty – Masterkraft

Most likely the name Sunday Ginikachukwu Nweke would not ring a bell but once Masterkraft is mentioned, then most of Banky W, Flavour, and Phyno’s hit songs would come to mind.

No doubt, the ever smiling music producer is one of the best on the continent especially as he just concluded works with rave-of- the-moment American singer, Jason Derulo, but life has not always been a bed of roses for the beat maker.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, he hinted that he was born into abject poverty and life as a child in Ajegunle was like sleeping in thorns.

“Growing up in Ajegunle was an experience for me because I was raised in abject poverty. The only thing that gave me joy was music especially because I was born in a white garment church. Playing music in church gave me hope. At a point in my life, I had to hawk; I sold ‘pure water’, tin tomato and also tissue paper, that is just to mention a few. Masterkraft (real name, Sunny Nweke) is a Nigerian producer. Born in Ajegunle, Lagos, he attended Festac Grammar School in Lagos. He wanted to be an accountant and then changed his mind to music but claims it was difficult to find a school teaching music so he decided to make some money producing beats.

Professionally, he began by playing the keyboard for different bands. At that point he worked with Gospel artists including Tim Godfrey and The Xtreme Crew, Sammie Okposo and Asu Ekiye. His move to the mainstream started when he met pioneering label boss Kenny Ogungbe of Kennis Music. An impressed Ogungbe insisted that he was going to make the young producer ubiquitous. They worked together, the young producer issuing beats to artists on the Kennis Music label. The roster included Jaywon for whom he did Facebook; Capital FEMI, for whom he produced Baby I Got It (Money Money) (2010). Masterkraft also worked with late singer Goldie.

Rapper MI heard a beat by Masterkraft and called singer Banky W leading to several collaborations. Banky W’s ‘Jasi’ (2013) and ‘Jaiye Ori

However, of grave concern to some education stakeholders is the state of infrastructure in most of the schools, especially in rural areas.

A Civil Society Activist and Founder, New Innovation in Development Education for a Healthy Living Society, Mr Sunny Nweke, attested to the fact that schools located within the urban centres often receive better attention from the government than those in the rural settlements of the state.

Mr Nweke puts in perspective:

“Those basic things that schools and education require in order to give quality, inclusive education are lacking in the rural communities, physical infrastructure, teaching and learning materials, quality and access. You can’t compare the condition of the rural areas to the urban. There is always room for improvement. The situation was worse even before Governor
