Ambassador Mamabolo has had a distinguished career in foreign relations, dating back to 1978 when at the age of 23 years, he was appointed Deputy Head of Mission of the African National Congress (ANC) to the United Republic of Tanzania. Ambassador Mamabolo held various leadership positions in the ANC in exile including the following:
• Head of Information and Publicity of the ANC Mission in Zimbabwe (1984),
• ANC Deputy Head of Mission in Zimbabwe (1985),
• ANC Head of Mission in Maputo, Mozambique (1987-1989); Cuba (1989 – 1993) and in 1993-94, served as ANC Head of Mission in Zimbabwe.
He returned to South Africa in 1994, thus ending a period of 18 years in exile.
Upon his return to South Africa, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was immediately appointed the first High Commissioner of democratic South Africa to the Republic of Zimbabwe. Jeremiah Kingsley Mamabolo is the Acting Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID). Prior to this appointment of 12 January 2017 by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Mr. Mamabolo was the Deputy Joint Special Representative (Political) for UNAMID.[1]
Biographical Information
Having served as the Deputy Joint Special Representative for UNAMID since 2016, Mr. Mamabolo brings first-hand experience to this position having overseen the legal, political and human rights aspects of the missions’ work. Prior to this appointment, from 2013 to 2016, he served as Permanent Representative of South Africa to the United Nations where he also served as acting Chair of the “Group of 77” developing countries and China. He was appointed High Commissioner of South Africa to Nigeria in 2009 and played an instrumental role in the peace processes in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
