Docu, book recount start of Shakira's career

A documentary and biography of Shakira, both put together by her first promoter, will recount the difficult start to the Colombian pop star's now-wildly successful music career.

Shakira: la niña de los pies descalzos - la verdadera historia (Shakira: The Barefoot Girl - the True Story) will be shown on Spanish television before the year's end, the singer's erstwhile promoter, Carlos Vanegas, told Spanish news agency EFE. He added that the book would go on the market in 2008.

Vanegas said that because he studied in Spain he decided to show the documentary there first, adding that the film -- which he said Shakira knows about but does not approve of -- will subsequently be shown in other countries.

"I let her know in May that I was doing this project. I wrote to her agent, her boyfriend Antonio de la Rua, but as of today I haven't had an official response," said Vanegas, who pointed out that from 1991 to 1993 he managed the career of the then-aspiring artist, a native of the city of Barranquilla in Colombia.

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born singer and songwriter Shakira has become one of Latin pop's biggest international crossover artists, selling millions worldwide and collecting hundreds of awards in the process. Noted for her rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music; she wrote or co-wrote nearly all of her own material, and in the process gained a reputation as one of the genre's most ambitiously poetic lyricists. Following the release of '90s breakthrough albums Pies Descalzos and Dónde Están los Ladrones?, she was primed to take her place on the global stage with her first English-language effort, 2001's chart-topping smash Laundry Service. Boosted by the radio hit "Whenever, Wherever"/"Suerte," the set became an instant pop sensation. From there, she remained a platinum-certified c

  • In 2005, mere months after releasing the blockbuster first instalment of her ambitious Fijación Oral double album, Colombian pop superstar Shakira unleashed Oral Fixation, Vol. 2, dipping back into her English lyrical arsenal for a fresh jolt of buzzing rock ‘n' roll. Both records were meticulously curated from a dizzying batch of 60 songs that included guest producers and performers such as Argentine rock legend Gustavo Cerati, Rick Rubin and Wyclef Jean. To a certain degree, the project aimed to recapture the poetic grittiness of her raging, raven-haired ‘90s work while applying the pop crossover lessons picked up during her incandescent Laundry Service era, four years prior. While Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 oscillated between earnestness and camp, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2 aimed to translate Shakira's famed poetic introspections for her growing English-speaking fan base. On groovy pop fantasy “Dreams for Plans”, she yearns for days spent doing everything and nothing with a paramour. For the show tune-esque “Hey You”, she takes a more assertive approach, brassily lusting over a lover
