Abstract

Hans von Marées (1837–1887), like Arnold Böcklin and all of their fellow “German-Romans,” spent much of his career in Italy. He went back to Germany in 1871–73 and experienced the feverish “founding period” that immediately followed unification. But he then returned to Italy, where he spent the rest of his life. There, he painted what has been described as a “timeless earthy paradise,” which was “‘poor’ in form but rich in color.” (Claude Keisch, in Francoise Forster-Hahn et al., Sprit of an Age: Nineteenth-Century Paintings from the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. London: National Gallery Company, 2001, p. 152). The work seen here is a preparatory oil painting for Marées’s first and only commission: frescoes for a marine observation station in Naples founded by the German zoologist Anton Dohrn. The style of Oarsmen differs from that of a Böcklin canvas, but it has a kinship with the work of Max Liebermann and other plein-air painters: the subject, for example, is treated in a straightforward manner, without any classical allusi

Founded in 1696, the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) in Berlin is one of the oldest cultural institutes in Europe. This international community of artists currently has about 400 members and includes the sections fine arts, architecture, music, literature, performing arts, as well as film and media art. Exhibitions, concerts, debates, readings, award ceremonies, film, theater and dance performances are organized here. In addition to the main building, the Akademie der Künste at Hanseatenweg is also an important location for exhibitions, events and meetings. This one includes the various archive buildings with their important collections. The prominent position of the Akademie der Künste at Pariser Platz in Berlin-Mitte, between Hotel Adlon and Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate), additionally underlines the relevance of this institution in Berlin. Biography

German painter, mainly of mythologies, who went to Italy in 1864. In 1869 he visited Spain, France, and the Netherlands with the writer on art, Konrad Fiedler, his future biographer. He served in the Francp-Prussian War of 1870-71, but was able to return to Italy in 1873 and began his most famous work, the frescoes in the Aquarium at Naples, on which he was assisted by Adolf von Hildebrand, the leading German sculptor. He spent the rest of his life in Italy, and, like Böcklin and Feuerbach, he was essentially a German Romantic who longed for Italy: unlike Leibl, he was untouched by the Realist movement and all that it implied. In spite of his interest in wall-painting and the success of his Naples frescoes he never succeeded in obtaining another monumental commission, The style of the frescoes is similar to that of his great French contemporary, Puvis de Chavannes.

He died in Rome at the age of 49 and is buried in the Protestant Cemetery there.
