About Khyatee Kanchan

Biography

I am an Architect by qualification, a Production Designer ( for films and TVCs) by profession and a Printmaker by avocation. I am an Indian Designer based in Germany. I work almost exclusively in the labour intensive medium of Lino printing: cutting and printing each design by hand, so no two prints are exactly the same.
I love the beautiful and messy basics of printmaking. I love the ink under my fingernails and the Lino shavings on the floor.
Just like Picasso said 'I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them'. To me, Printmaking or Drawing is an art of observation. It's about finding something extraordinary in an ordinary place. I've found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them. I see or think those things and create. My art is not limited to the prints I create but to the reactions it creates. I like to sit back and look at the whole thing as if its the storm I am controlling and ideas are turned upside down. Controversy

Mullick married Sreemoyee Chattoraj on 14 February 2024,[20] but during the traditional ceremony on 6 March, an invitation card was widely circulated to social media that press, security personnel and drivers were not allowed to enter there. This was highly criticised in the media.[21] Later Mullick apologized to all.[22][23]

Born 1957 in New Delhi, Kanchan studied art in her Foundation Year at Weisensee Kunst Hochschule in Berlin and BFA in painting and printmaking from Delhi College of Art, New Delhi.

Kanchan's works are of the domestic centricity of feminine experience, of an iconic feminine energy, and of her easy appropriation of the idea of the mythic divine feminine. The Devi and the torso become common themes throughout her artwork. Brightly painted, monumental and bedecked with sequins, silver leaf and beads. Her works celebrate the fertile, the erotic and the sensuousness of the female form. Luminous cerulean blues, yellows and bright reds make the surface vibrant. Kanchan's personal lifescape, dilemmas, conflicts, joys and aches screened through subjective distortions inject substance into her art. Kanchan's works are in the collection of the Nation Gallery Modern Art, Delhi; Mumbai International Airport and Kiran Nadar Collection to name a few. She lives and works in New Delhi.
