Catching Up In Cotabato
This, for example, was the fate of Jerry “Boyet” Loyola, the Indigenous People’s (IP) affairs desk officer of Makilala town in North Cotabato, who was shot and killed by gunmen riding-in-tandem on a motorbike on January 11, 2024. He had been active in contentious advocacies and was also red-tagged prior to his death.
Red-tagging and political killings are inevitably linked to political and environmental issues that bring about tensions among economic interest groups, politicians, and opposition groups, such as those involving mines and coal-fired power plants. In face of these, CHR keeps to its mandate by focusing on those whose rights are being undermined. ASIN founding member launches book
BY CHRYSEE G. SAMILLANO
The founding member of the Pinoy folk rock band, ASIN launched a book he wrote about the band’s biography at the Negros Museum in Bacolod City Saturday.
Miguel Pillora Jr., also called Mike or Nonoy, said he started writing the book titled “Kasaysayan ng Alamat ng Grupong ASIN” about 20 years ago. It narrated about how their group was established and the issues and struggles they had faced since it was formed in 1977.
The group was originally composed of Lolita Carbon, who is from Luzon, Cesar “Saro” Bañares, who represented Mindanao, and himself who represented the Visayas, all singer-composers, before they were joined by Pendong Aban, Jr.
ASIN, which means salt of the earth, popularized songs like “Bayan Ko,” “Masdan mo ang Kapaligiran,” “Cotabato,” “Ang Magnanakaw,” among others, which raised social awareness among Filipinos.
Pillora said the group was at the peak of its popularity for about 20 years before it broke up in 1988. They later held a reunion concert at the Folk Arts Theater in 1992

After fronting rock and roll bands during her teens, Lolita Carbon met Cesar "Saro" Bañares Jr., Mike Pillora Jr., and Pendong Aban Jr. in Kola House, a folk rock club, and then decided to form their own musical group, naming it Salt of the Earth.
They had signed a major record label and renamed their band to Asin after a record producer was searching for a "female" Freddie Aguilar, taking advantage of the Filipino folk rock boom during the late 1970s. Their eponymous 1978 debut album includes a cover of Freddie Aguilar's "Anak" and the rest are all original works.
Some of their popular songs include the environmental song "Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran," "Ang Bayan Kong Sinilangan," "Pagbabalik," and "Balita." According to Pendong Aban Jr. who grew up in Agusan del Norte, most of their songs were based on the experiences in Mindanao. Because of too much illegal logging and violence in their homelan
