John Peter Smith (September 16, 1831 – April 11, 1901), known as the 'Father of Fort Worth', was born in Owen County, Kentucky, to Samuel and Polly (Bond) Smith. Smith was instrumental in the early prosperity of the city of Fort Worth, its establishment as the Tarrant Countyseat, and the creation of the county's only public hospital which still bears his name.

The recent acquisition of John Peter Smith’s papers on the foundation of the cervical cytology unit in Manchester has triggered interest into the origins of cervical smear testing in the UK.

Sir John Williams first identified the lesion that would eventually be known as carcinoma in situ of the cervix in 1886; however, cancer has been described since Egyptian times, and both Hippocrates and Galen recorded it in their patients, and Paul of Aegina (c. 600AD) diagnosed and treated the disease cancers of the uterus. However, it would not be until the development of microscopes and histology that diagnosing and effectively treating cancers could be achieved.

The pathologist Walter Schiller was the first to propose the term “pre-invasive carcinoma”, but it would be George N. Papanicolaou’s contributions which would have a profound impact on cervical cancer diagnosis. Judge John P. Smith was appointed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals on December 19, 2012 after serving for 21 years on the Ninth Judicial District Court.

John Paul Smith graduated with honors from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota in 1971. He then attended William Mitchell College of Law, where he earned his law degree in 1975. Following law school, Judge Smith joined the firm of Smith, Hunter and Valen in Park Rapids, Minnesota.

Judge Smith worked as a civil trial specialist at Smith, Hunter and Valen from 1976 to 1991. During this time, he also earned his L.L.M. in Litigation from Emory University in 1987. After 15 years in private practice, Judge Smith was appointed to the Ninth Judicial District Court by Governor Arne Carlson on August 13, 1991. After being appointed, he would go on to be re-elected to his position in 1992, 1998, 2004, and 2010. Judge Smith's tenure on the Ninth District bench included a stint serving as the District's Chief Judge.
