Gaye LeBaron: Dabbling in History

One of the things you learn when you dabble in history, either world or local, is that nothing ever really goes away. The search for a perfect world is … a perfect example. In Sonoma County’s history ‘ancient’ and recent, from the Utopian movement of the 19th century to the smoky uber-rural clusters of homemade homes in the coastal mountains, there are many stories to be told.

The poet William Wordsworth tried to warn us.

“The world is too much with us; late and soon,” he wrote.

That was 218 years ago and he was worrying about what the Industrial Revolution would do to the world.

He was, of course, right to be concerned. You can look it up. But it’s not strange that his poem, so familiar to aging English majors, would come to mind.

If you don’t really care about the world changing-effects of the Industrial Revolution, then pick an issue, any issue. Actually, let’s not.

Instead, let’s consider a discussion topic that isn’t a world-changer. If we can find one. And let’s agree that the well-named Mr. Wordsworth’s 1802 worldview can have new meaning in this troubled time of great change.

American columnist, teacher and historian

Gaye Theresa LeBaron (born 1935)^[1] is an American newspaper columnist, author, teacher, and local historian of Sonoma County, California. She wrote more than 8,000 columns for The Press Democrat from 1961 until her semi-retirement in 2001. She also co-authored two books on the history of Santa Rosa, California.

Early life and education

Gaye Andrews was born in a small town by the Eel River in Humboldt County, California. She was named for her father, Guy Andrews, who died when she was seven.^[2]^[1] She moved with her mother to her stepfather's home in Boyes Hot Springs, Sonoma County, when she was 14.

She graduated from Sonoma Valley High School. She then attended Santa Rosa Junior College and transferred to the UC Berkeley, earning her B.A. in English and history.^[2]
