Richard Morris Gilliland (January 23, 1950 – March 18, 2021; age 71) played Captain Stan Cotter during Season 5 of 24.

Biography and career[]

Richard Gilliland was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He began his professional acting career in the 1970's, appearing in shows like The Streets of San Francisco, McMillan & Wife, and Operation Petticoat. He also played Laurie on the television series Little Women, Jonesy on The Waltons, and J.D. Shackelford on Designing Women.

Gilliland has also appeared in films like Vampire Clan, Star Kid and Happy Hour. In recent years, he guest starred in shows like The Unit (with Dennis Haysbert and Max Martini), and Desperate Housewives (with Ricardo Chavira, Doug Savant, and Jeffrey Nordling).

Gilliland was married to fellow 24 star, Jean Smart, since June 7, 1987. The couple met on the set of Designing Women and they had one child together. Gilliland passed away on March 18, 2021, following a short illness.

  Richard Morris Gilliland (January 23, 1950 – March 18, 2021) was an American television and movie actor, best known as JD Shackleford in Designing Women (1986–1992).^[1]

  Life and career

  Gilliland was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to parents Richard Velton Gilliland and Betty Gene née Morris Gilliland.^[2] He attended Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, Kansas, graduating in 1968. He was active in plays and musicals.^[3] He studied drama at the University of Kansas for two years before transferring to the Goodman School of Drama in Chicago.^[4] He left school his final year to become a member of the Chicago Free Street Theater. He joined the cast of Godspell in Chicago first as a disciple and then in the leading role before moving to Los Angeles in 1973.^[3]
