Shabir Hussain: Son of a textile worker, inventor of the 'naan tree' and the 'best waiter in Bradford'

He was the textile worker's son who became the founder and chief executive of Akbar's - a chain of 10 restaurants across the UK.

Shabir Hussain, who has died at the age of 56, grew up to invent the 'naan tree' and be dubbed the 'best waiter in Bradford'. But he had humble origins, arriving in the UK at the tender age of seven after migrating with his family from Pakistan.

Originally from Rawalpindi, Shabir's Pakistani father worked in the textile industry in Bradford, raising his family in a typical 'two up, two down' property in the Yorkshire city. Shabir came to Bradford with his mum when he was just a boy.

Born in Baroda on 26th October in a house of an officer from the Revenue Department, Shabbir Shaikh (former name) never had an inclination towards music. Singing and Music was never an ambition for young Shabbir, in fact just like every other ordinary man he was also foreseen following footsteps of his father in a reputed white collar Government job.

Till 7th Standard he was studying in a place where there were only 9 houses in the vicinity and electricity was a word people would hardly be familiar with. Right from childhood he was very good at studies and painting. Shabbir's mom used to sing the "Naath Qalaam" for the kids quite often, it was this melodious voice that drew his interest towards music. He started emulating his mom and with time people around started taking notice.

Shabir Ahmad Shah popularly known as Shabir Shah (born 14 June 1953), in Kadipora, Anantnag, Kashmir is the founder and president of the Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (JKDFP),[1] one of the main separatist political organizations seeking "right of self-determination" to Jammu and Kashmir.

Birth and childhood

Born in a business family of South Kashmir's Kadipora town in district Anantnag on 14 June 1953. Shabir Ahmad Shah Varrier did his early schooling at Government Middle School, Sarnal, Anantnag and passed a higher secondary examination from M.I. Higher Secondary School, Anantnag but could not continue his studies due to affiliation with various students’ leagues for which was jailed at very early age.[2]
