Tribune de Lausanne Newspaper … every morning

About this poster

This smart poster for the morning newspaper “Tribune de Lausanne” was one of Herbert Leupin’s favourites. He cut the shape of a coffee pot out of a title page of the newspaper to create a simple and effective message: read your morning news in the “Tribune de Lausanne”. A unique and rare original vintage poster by the master of Swiss poster design using various graphic techniques like collages, photomontage, scribbles and a realistic painting style.

Herb Leupin “A great swissman“

To continue our series of articles on the great names in graphic design, after having taken a look at Great Britain with Edward Bawden a few weeks ago, we are going back to Switzerland to rediscover Herb Leupin's work.

Moreover, we had already presented a Baloise in this section, Rolf Rappaz... to believe that this city is a mine of talented graphic designers!

The swiss period

Herbert Leupin was born in Beinwil (Switzerland) in 1916. He spent most of his childhood in Augst, a village near Basel. His passion for drawing began very early, and following the advice of his teacher, he entered the Gewerbeschule (vocational school) in Basel in 1931. His talent is recognized and encouraged by Paul Kammüller (poster artist) and Theo Eble (the founding artist of Gruppe 33, a group of artists from Basel). The young man's talent was also recognised by Hermann Eidenbenz, in whose studio he began working as a graphic designer. There he gained valuable experience in advertising and photography.

Between 1935 and 1936, Leupin continued his studies in France, t

After a difficult and secluded period of his childhood in his ‘father’s’ kitchen (his parents owned a restaurant in Augst near Basel), he studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel (1932–35). He received his practical education with Hermann Eidenbenz. In 1936 Herbert went to Paris to study at the École Paul Colin. In 1938, he started his own studio and designed record sleeves and advertising, but mainly posters. With his lyrical and childlike sense of humour and his lightness of touch he became one of the most distinguished Swiss poster designers. He received many awards, among them those from the ADC Chicago (1960), Warsaw Poster Biennale (1968) and in 1974 the Ernst Litfass Medal in Kassel. Many exhibitions were held all over the world, including Chicago, Offenbach, Hamburg and his last one, at the Ginza Graphic Gallery (GGG) in Tokyo in 1998, one year before his death. In his later years he illustrated children’s books, very successfully. From 1970 on he was also a painter.
