Mike Goodman

American gambler, pit boss, and author

Mike Goodman was an American professional gambler, a pit boss for a Las Vegas casino, and an author of books that gave advice on gambling and told stories of gamblers and their escapades. He is most known for his 1963 book How to Win: At Cards, Dice, Races, Roulette, which went through many printings and sold over a million copies.

Early life, gambler and casino employee

Goodman was born in Rochester, New York.[1] By one account, he was already gambling with dice at eight years of age.[1] Growing up he worked as a waiter at Cohen's Kosher Restaurant on Joseph Avenue in Rochester.[1]

He came under the tutelage of Pat Mangin, a well-known professional gambler in the Rochester area.[1] Goodman began working as a professional gambler himself around the early 1930s.[2]

After he was married in 1940 to Francesca Scorza of Rochester,[3] Goodman's son Michael J. was born in 1942.[4] He and his wife had three children in total.[5] Goodman

Michael was born in Atlanta, GA and received his BFA in Photography from Georgia State University. In 1974 he was a founding member of Nexus Photography Gallery. He received his Masters of Fine Art in 1976 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in Photography with a minor in Art History. While in graduate school, he attended the Chicago Graphic Arts Project in the evenings to learn offset printing. Upon receiving his MFA, he returned to Atlanta he became the founder and first director of Nexus Press in 1977. Nexus Press went on to be one of the few artists’ presses in the country to use the offset printing medium as an artistic tool. Nexus Press books are now housed in museums and private collections throughout the world. Michael’s photographs and artists’ books are in private and museum collections. His personal book and photographic archive is housed at Emory University’s Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library.
